Family Movie Night: Hocus Pocus

One of my family’s favorite ways to prepare for a Disney vacation, help us get through the wait for our next vacation, or just give us something to forward to, is with family movie nights! With our movie nights, I pick out a family film we will all enjoy and then plan a themed meal around the movie!  

For this year’s Halloween, we decided to watch our family favorite – Hocus Pocus!

Now, I have some picky eaters in my house, so I had to come up with a diverse meal with something for everyone. I made cocktail weiners in barbeque sauce for an appetizer, but for nice spooky effect, I took a knife and cut a square of the skin off at one end like a toenail, and cut two small lines for the knuckle. These looked disgusting…and of course, my kids loved them!

For our main dish, I made stuffed Jack-o-Lanterns. I took an orange bell pepper and cut the top off and set it aside. I cleaned the seeds out, and then I carved triangle eyes and a smiling face and baked it empty in an oven preheated to 350 for 10 minutes. For the filling, I browned a pound of ground beef with diced onions and green peppers (mom tip- that’s how I sneak in some extra veggies with every meal!). I combined that with taco seasoning, black beans, a ½ package of shredded cheese, a can of tomatoes, a can of black beans, a can of corn, and a package of Spanish Rice prepared according to the package.

I took the bell peppers out of the oven and stuffed them with the taco mixture. I covered each pepper with more shredded cheese and then put the top back on the pepper to make it look like a pumpkin. I covered the dish with foil and returned it to the oven for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until they reach your desired consistency.

For a fun twist on a drink, I made virgin “pina colada” smoothies with a “black flame” on it. For the drink, I found frozen fruit and blended them with milk then topped the drinks with a chocolate covered strawberry to serve as the flame.

No family movie night could be complete without a fun dessert. I decided to make Book Brownies. I have to admit- I was pretty nervous about this one. My art skills aren’t the best (my specialty is stick figures!) but even I was able to do this!

I baked a box of brownies according to the package (I like to use shortcuts- you can substitute your favorite recipe here) and let them cool.  I then cut the brownies into squares and used black frosting gel to make the stitches on the book.  Using the same gel, I glued on a candy eyeball to complete the look! These were a huge hit with my kids! They deemed the brownies the best part of the meal, and honestly, they were my personal favorite too!
